What is Reiki?

Spiritually Guided Life-force Energy

The word Reiki is the combination of two Japanese words:

Rei meaning "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power"  +  Ki meaning "life force energy" =

Reiki meaning "spiritually guided life force energy."

  • Reiki is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion.

  • Reiki is not tied to any specific religious practice

  • A Reiki session usually is between 60 and 90 minutes in length.

  • The session is performed by a Reiki Practitioner (RP or RMT) using specific Reiki hand positions.

  • Reiki practitioners use their hands to transfer energy, either moving their hands just over the body without touching or by lightly touching the body.

  • This low- or no-touch therapy can offer significant benefits with little to no negative side effects.

  • During a Reiki session, the client is fully clothed while reclining on a massage table or seated in a chair.

"Reiki is Ki that is guided by the Higher mind Rei. Reiki cannot cause harm, and can only carry out its mission, which is to heal and return all it touches to healthy functioning. Reiki does this on all levels, body, mind and spirit working to make is all whole and complete. Reiki knows the cause of every illness and difficulty, and also knows how to heal them. So I might also call it God, God consciousness, or the Holy Spirit. It represents the oneness of all that exists. Therefore a good definition of Reiki is that it is the primal energy of the universe, being guided by the highest wisdom of the universe. Because of this, Reiki cannot be affected by our conscious minds or by anything negative. It can only create good. This is why Reiki is such a wonderful, healing energy.”              (William Rand)

~ Memorial stone of Mikao Usui, founder of the Usui System of Reiki Healing

History of Reiki

Developed by Mikao Usui in Japan in the 1920s, Reiki is rooted in ancient Japanese healing arts and is useful for pain, stress and relaxation management that promotes healing.  Reiki is not tied to any specific religious practice, but is considered a spiritually-based practice.  It is applied by lightly laying on hands just above or on the clothed body, and it is rooted in the concept that the life force energy flows through us causing us to be alive.

Reiki is a gentle technique that is suitable for even very fragile patients, so it is accepted widely in hospitals and hospices around the world as it is a relaxing form of healing therapy applied through noninvasive, nonmanipulative gentle touch.

How Reiki Works

Touch ~ Harmony ~ Empathy ~ Balance

Reiki is effective in activating the parasympathetic nervous system,

The parasympathetic nervous system is one branch of the autonomic nervous system (ANS), the other branch is the sympathetic nervous system. In healthy persons, the these branches of the ANS are maintained in a state of dynamic balance, or homeostasis. The vagus nerve, which plays a role in physical and mental health, mediates this balance.  When the ANS moves toward a greater parasympathetic state, toward balance, it helps the body’s natural healing processes, optimizing the body’s natural healing systems, including the immune system.

Reiki in Integrative Medicine

Accepted in Hospitals worldwide

Though not commonly known, Reiki is actually used in hospitals across the United States, even at the research hospital of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Reiki is classified as a biofeld energy therapy by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM, an organization in the NIH). An NIH paper on Reiki says it has "broad potential as a complementary heath therapy"

Sample of hospitals including Reiki in their Integrative Medicine Programs:

  • Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (NY)

  • Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center (NY)

  • NIH’s Warren G. Magnuson Clinical Center (MD)

  • Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center (NH),

  • General Hospital (WA)

  • Beebe Medical Center (DE)

Why Dr. Oz has Embraced the Healing Powers of Reiki

Recognized across the US for his down to earth approach and interest in alternative healing modalities Dr. Mehmet Oz is a true patient advocate sharing the spotlight for complimentary therapies in order to bring awareness about the best options for solutions to important health issues.

Dr Oz says he "actually feels the heat" when receiving Reiki and occasionally discusses the benefits on his show. He knows the benefits of this technique for body-mind harmony which holds the potential to be a catalyst for medical breakthroughs quite well because his wife, Lisa Oz, is a Reiki master. She wholly embraces energy healing and predicted in a recent interview that " the next wave of medical advances will be when we come to recognize the body as an energetic system".

"He believes that Reiki offers a multitude of benefits worth sharing. Occasionally, Oz even invites Reiki masters into his operating room, allowing them to tend to patients undergoing precarious surgeries like heart transplants. Drawing on viable unseen energies, Reiki masters like Pamela Miles, Raven Keyes & Julie Motz have melded their expertise with Oz’s mastery as a heart surgeon."

Pet Reiki sessions are a freer form than human Reiki sessions.  More like the way children receive healing energy, Animals move around, connect at a distance, and often like less formal approach.
